working principle

The Static Var Generator (SVG) utilizes controllable power electronic devices (such as IGBTs) to form a self-commutated bridge circuit, which is connected in parallel with the power grid through reactors. By adjusting the amplitude and phase of the output voltage on the AC side of the bridge circuit, or by directly controlling the AC side current, the SVG can quickly absorb or deliver the required reactive power, thereby achieving rapid dynamic adjustment of reactive power.

The voltage source inverter consists of two parts: a DC capacitor and an inverter bridge, with the inverter bridge made up of controllable semiconductor devices (IGBTs). By adjusting the switching of the IGBT devices in the inverter bridge, the amplitude and phase of the voltage converted from DC to AC can be controlled. The entire device functions as a phase-shifting power source, and by detecting the required reactive power in the system, it can quickly deliver reactive power of equal magnitude and opposite phase, achieving local balance of reactive power and maintaining real-time high power factor operation of the system.

The difference between SVG (Static Var Generator) and SVC (Static Var Compensator)

Compared with the traditional SVC device represented by TCR, the regulation speed of the static var generator (SVG) is faster and the operation range is wider. Moreover, after adopting multiple and equal PWM technical measures, the content of carrier frequency harmonics in compensation current is reduced. More importantly, the reactor and capacitor elements used in SVG are much smaller than those used in SVC, which will greatly reduce the volume of the device.
