Static Var Generators (SVG), also known as active power factor compensators (APF)or instantaneous stepless reactive power compensators, effectively address power quality issues caused by low power factors and reactive power demands across various applications. These high-performance, compact, and modular active power filters (APF) offer an instantaneous response to power quality problems in both low and high voltage systems. SVGs enhance equipment lifespan, improve process reliability, increase power system capacity and stability, and reduce energy losses, all while meeting stringent power quality standards and grid codes.

    SVG Fundamental Principle

    SVG, also referred to as a dynamic reactive power compensation generator or static synchronous compensator, denotes a device that provides dynamic reactive power compensation through a self-commutated power semiconductor bridge converter. The fundamental principle is that the self-commutation bridge circuit consists of turn-off, high-power, and high-frequency power electronic components (such as IGBT), which are connected in parallel to the power grid via a reactor. The magnitude and phase of the output voltage on the AC side of the bridge circuit can be modified in real time, or the AC side current can be directly regulated, allowing the bridge circuit to either absorb or deliver reactive current to achieve dynamic reactive power compensation and voltage dynamic regulation, among other functions.

    Why use a Static Var Generator

    • Improving Power Quality: The SVG system thus improves power quality either by compensating for reactive power in the system, thus reducing voltage fluctuation and harmonics, or by contributing to the stability of the power network. 
    • Rapid Dynamic Response: Unlike conventional reactive power compensating devices like capacitors and inductors, SVG possesses a faster dynamic response that allows it to change output in real time when there is a load change or disturbance in the grid. 
    • Space & Cost Saving: The other relative compact design of the SVG appears to be flexible in installation, thereby eliminating the necessity of traditional devices for reactive power and no longer needing to save up its related infrastructural cost. 
    • Improving System Efficiency: SVG proper management of the reactive power will definitely improve the total efficiency of the entire power system as well as decrease energy losses.
