The Working Principle of Active Power/ Harmonic Filter APF
An active power filter is a new type of specialized equipment for power harmonic governance, which is made using modern power electronics technology and digital signal processing technology based on high-speed DSP devices. It consists of two main parts: the command current operation circuit and the compensation current generation circuit. The command current operation circuit monitors the current in the line in real time, converts the analog current signal into a digital signal, and sends it to the high-speed digital signal processor (DSP) for signal processing. It separates the harmonics from the fundamental wave and sends a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal as a driving pulse to the compensation current generation circuit in the form of a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, driving the IGBT or IPM power module to generate a compensation current with the same amplitude and opposite polarity as the grid harmonic current and injecting it into the grid to compensate for or cancel out the harmonic current, actively eliminating power harmonics.

APF Wiring Method
The LOAD end is connected to the load. That is, N is connected to the neutral wire, and L is connected to the live wire. The three E's on the right are grounded, with N connected to the neutral wire and L connected to the live wire. This is the power input end.The wiring method is as follows: Input L is connected to 1, N is connected to 2; Output L' is connected to 3, N' is connected to 4; the ground wire is grounded.

By increasing the output voltage levels, this topology makes the pulse-width modulation (PWM) waveform closer to the ideal sine wave, reducing the ripple current and harmonic content, thereby improving the harmonic compensation effect. In addition, the volume of the filter is reduced, which is conducive to modular design. The inductor loss is decreased, further enhancing the system efficiency. The voltage stress on IGBTs is halved, the switching loss is reduced, and the thermal margin is increased, enabling the system to operate stably at higher switching frequencies. Overall, the three-level topology provides a more efficient and reliable solution for modern power electronics technology.
